The all-new Audi A5 Sportback features an elongated power dome hood that nods to the impressive engine underneath, while its newly available sleek sportback body type expresses an elevated design language that speaks volumes. While the eye traces a gracefully flowing wave line from the Singleframe® grille to sculptural LED taillights, heads will turn and hearts will follow.
If you’ve driven the Audi A5, then there’s not much more to say about this Sportback than that it’s got two more doors. Not our words, but those of Audi itself, which is understandably keen to exploit the connotations that come from the Sportback being based on a sleek coupe.
In terms of how the car looks, it’s a fair point, because the A5 Sportback is unusually stylish for what is essentially a five-door hatchback. The real challenge, however, is whether it can deliver a driving experience to match the lighter two-door coupe, or for that matter, the BMW 4-series Gran Coupe, which serves as its closest rival.
Depending on whether you choose a petrol or diesel engine, buyers can opt for front-wheel drive or Quattro all-wheel drive, while at the top of the range sits a high-performance S5 Sportback model.
For all the reasons you might buy an A5 Sportback over the two-door coupe, space must be the most important. The good news, then, is that there is a lot more of it, with a large boot that matches the BMW 4-series Gran Coupe for space, and thus will accommodate a couple of large suitcases or two sets of golf clubs. The rear seats can be folded to extend this space, but don’t go completely flat.
Those used to travelling in the back of the previous A5 Sportback will appreciate the extra rear leg room in this new model, which means one tall adult can sit behind another with room to spare. Despite the sweeping roofline, head room is also very good. However, while there is a seat belt for a middle seat passenger, the large lump in the floor and hard backrest mean that sitting there is an underwhelming experience.
